Description

A Baloz is an antagonist class — typically a giant or armored champion, often sea-risen and marked i zi — who demands tribute, slays mejdan challengers, or hunts a hero’s grave. Habitive formula: «ka dalë nji baloz / bajloz prej detit». In cycle speech the same lexeme also means a black champion epithet; not every bajloz line is a creature encounter.

Lead story

Word went out that a black baloz had risen from the sea. Not a village shadow — a foreign power at the waterline: soot-dark kit the color of blozë, scale of a vigan, voice that laid haraç on the krajli and the towers. Each house a roast, each house a maiden; kreshnikë who took the mejdan died; the land was eaten week by week. When the levy reached the kulla where Gjergj Elez Alia had lain nine years with nine wounds, the sister’s tears fell on his face. He rose. At dawn on the mejdan the baloz mocked a man come up from the grave. The hero answered with forefathers’ law: nothing without arms. Cudgels first — the baloz’s blow dropped the courser and flew twenty-four yards; Gjergj’s return felled the champion. Sabre cut the head. The torso went to the water until the river ran black three years. That is the defeat pattern of this adversary: sea-rise, tribute, flyting, beheading, black stain. Other songs keep the same prej detit formula — grave-hunt against Mujo’s coffin, thirty bajloza at a city gate, Sedelija named among the shkje — but the silhouette does not become a storm-dragon, and it does not shrink to a generic black knight with no sea at his heels.
