Description

Canonical Albanian pest-revenant / undead figure. A wicked living person rises from the grave especially every night except Saturday; visits kin and neighbors; disturbs houses; frightens; harms livestock; assaults sleepers; lures children from shadow places (wells, ruins, caves). Iconography and regional Jud/Judi night-wrestler faces stay under this page rather than as a separate navigation peer.

Lead story

Saturday the grave keeps him. Every other night the earth does not. He climbs wearing another man’s skin, nails grown past the living’s measure. Sometimes the yard only sees a thin yellow flame moving where no torch is carried — past the well that never takes sun, past the ruin wall, toward the houses of kin who still sleep. Windows rattle. Livestock sicken. Children are called from the dark edge of the yard and must not answer. When the village has had enough, the work is not a duel at midnight. A fatwa to open the ground. A white stallion led over the mound — if the horse refuses, the grave is filled with brush and oil and burned. If he is left unburned in the Tomorr telling, folk say a heavier thing waits: kukudh. A wolf, they say, can drive him back under the soil before men do. On eclipse nights rifles crack at the moon so he will let go of what he tries to eat. Pregnant women stay indoors. None of this is a cape in a ballroom. It is a corpse the earth spat out, and fire that puts it back.
