Story paths

Description

Elder brother-hero of the Kângë Kreshnikësh cycle. Known as Gjeto Basho Muji (Mujo) of Jutbina, paired with younger brother Halili. Origin song Fuqija e Mujit / “Mujo’s Strength” (Palaj–Kurti n. 7; Elsie–Mathie-Heck song 1) recounts a cowherd who rocks two zana infants, chooses strength over wealth or languages, drinks zana milk, and passes a progressive boulder test until he lifts a rock of “one thousand okas” / “three teams of oxen” to his shoulders — song formula compares the gift to the strength of a dragua/drangue. He becomes blood-brother to the zanas, returns to Jutbina, floors the teasing herders, and later leads the thirty-aga band. Orët e Mujit (“Mujo’s Oras”) places him under the care of epic ora. No powers beyond the milk-gift, blood-brotherhood aid, and cycle warrior feats described in the songs are claimed here.

Features

  • extraordinary bodily strength from repeated zana milk (tree-uprooting sensation; progressive boulder lifts to shoulders)
  • blood-brotherhood reciprocity with the gifting zanas (call for aid)
  • cycle-standard kreshnik warfare and hunting prowess after empowerment

Lead story

Muji (Mujo), son of a poor mountain man near Jutbina, herded another man’s cows for bread and salt. One day he lost the herd in the high pastures. Night found him by a boulder; two cradles wept nearby. He rocked the infants until they slept. At midnight two lights crowned the rock—two zanas, who knew him from the meadows. For tending their children they offered a wish: warrior strength, wealth, or many tongues. He asked only for strength enough to beat the cowherds who mocked him. They gave him their milk—three drops first. He felt he could tear a tree from the earth. They pointed to the great boulder and bid him lift it. He raised it only to his ankles and let it fall. More milk: to his knees. Again: to his waist. Once more, and the song says the Lord gave him strength like a dragua. He seized the thousand-oka stone, bore it to his shoulders, held it aloft. The zanas refused further milk, lest he crush the world. They asked him to be their blood brother; he answered that when he needed them they should aid him, and he them if insulted. Dawn took the cradles and the light. At a spring he proved it was no dream—he shouldered another rock twenty men could not move and cast it down the cliffs. He found his cows and drove them to the Plain of Jutbina. The herders jeered; he seized the strongest, shook him, and hurled him. The rest fled. He quit his master’s service, went home to father, mother, Halili and sister, and thereafter hunted and fought as the empowered kreshnik of the cycle.
