Story paths

Description

Semi-human winged storm culture-hero kind of Albanian folk belief — archetype of light/order against kulshedra (darkness/chaos). Not a single named epic protagonist: a kind of person born into ordinary highland households. Infants destined as drangue are born “in a shirt/chemise” (caul/amniotic membrane over the head), with two or four wings under the arms; power concentrates in wings and arms. Invulnerability from the singular birth-conjunction (dies only if that conjunction repeats; Rugova variants: if seen/known by anyone but the mother). Live unnoticed among humans; infant djepësor already show power and gather with cradles when thunder strikes. Fight kulshedra with lightning/thunderbolts, meteoric stones, plow-beam and share, millstones, cradle-as-shield, uprooted trees/houses. Thunderstorms = their battles. Golden jeweled heart if dissected. Animal forms: black ram, black rooster; billy goat never. SE regions envisage a winged horse. Sources: Bardhi 1635; Elsie s.v. Dragua (2001:74–76); Tirta 2004; Lahuta cantos 16–17; Twins/Zef. Disambiguate older dragùa “dragon” lexical sense from this hero kind.

Lead story

The midwife wiped the membrane from the boy’s face and said nothing the neighbors needed to hear. Born in a shirt, they call it — caul over the crown, and under each arm a fold of wing no bigger than a hand. His mother kept the secret the way highland women keep powder dry. He grew among them: same bread, same pasture, same silence when strangers asked too much. Only when the sky bruised and the first bolt split the ridge did the house know what slept in the cradle-room. Infant djepësor rose with their wooden cradles; grown drangue tore plow-beams from the yard, seized millstones, lifted timber as if it were reed. The cradle became a shield. Lightning was a thrown blade. Above the kulë the kulshedra coiled — wool and fire, drought in her wake, flood in her thrash — and the roll of thunder was not weather alone but the sound of that fight. Trees and houses left the earth; stones that had never flown found the air. When the storm passed, the man who had been a neighbor again walked the lane as if he had only gone for salt. In some valleys they still name their own: Lleshi i Zi of Mirdita to land the last blow; Vocërr Bala when a kulshedra crawls from a Shalë cave; two wedding-ready fighters at Qafë Hardhi who turn aside a marching column before the oras call them to feast. The class outlives any one name. As long as caul-children are born, the sky still has someone to answer the serpent.
