Story paths

Description

Elsie: April 23 marks beginning of summer / old new year; high point of Christian calendar for popular customs ensuring growth in children, animals, crops; May 6 eastern calendar in Kosova/Macedonia with flija and flower/water/herd rites (nettles, river baths, dawn doorway branches, Shala herbs to animals, Mirdita thunder-between-two-George-days → no snakes). Cave near Besh–Dajti: pilgrimage on feast (historic ethnography only). Legend edge: hunting hero; folk tale kills kulshedra / saves princess — Muslims attribute deeds to sari_salltek. Bolla cross: eye-opening on St George’s Day = related figure date only — physiology stays on bolla. Do not steal bariu_i_shenjte. Soft links to dielli, enji/zjarr, dheu, vitore, shen_ilia.

Lead story

April — or May, if the eastern calendar holds — opens the warm half of the year. Before dawn someone cuts branches for the doorway; children meet water and flowers; in the high pastures herbs go to the flocks. The name is Shëngjergji: saint and season hinge at once. In mud and reed another calendar keeps the same day. The closed-eye bollë, cursed to blindness except on George’s feast, lifts its lids then — a fear timed to this hinge, not a god’s biography. On the mountain above Besh the cave still holds the old visit story: candles, coins, clothes left to take the sanctity home. Muslims in other tellings hang the dragon deed on Sari Salltëk.

Two functions: (1) master of wolves (feeds, directs, punishes; can shut their mouths); (2) holy shepherd of flocks. Saint George sometimes absorbs wolf/flock attributes. Syncretism banner required; not Zeus/Pan cosplay. Soft pair with Zana as nature pair — kept separate.
