The Moon

Hëna

Hënë; Gheg Hana / Hanë) is the animistically personified female Moon of Albanian pagan belief — the celestial counterpart of Dielli (the Sun).

Description

Hëna (indef. Hënë; Gheg Hana / Hanë) is the animistically personified female Moon of Albanian pagan belief — the celestial counterpart of Dielli (the Sun). Cult density is high in custom and material religion, thinner as a named narrative goddess. Cyclical phases regulate agriculture and livestock, crafts, body care, marriage timing, and house foundations; waxing associates with fertility and light, waning with sterility and dark. Oaths (besa/be) may be sworn me hënë (by the moon) alongside sun, sky, earth, fire, stone, mountain, water, snake. Crescent (often rayed with “twigs” of light) and sun–moon pairs appear on tattoos, graves, jewellery, embroidery, and carvings; Durham’s Thethi–Shala informants identified grave semicircle twigs as “the light coming from the Moon.” Pair with Dielli: in some tales husband/wife (and parents of E Bija e Hënës dhe e Diellit); in others brother/sister — never consorts in the sibling reading. Early written notice: Sebastian Franck 1534 (Albanians as sun-and-moon worshippers). Old Albanian Hana/Hanë appears in Bogdani (1685) as the Albanian rendering of Roman Diana — a name-gloss in a learned book, not a warrant to invent a Diana-clone biography or to merge zana into this figure. Prende is not the moon.

Lead story

Night over the highland stone. On an old grave a semicircle is cut shallow; from its edge, short lines run like twigs. Ask what the twigs are, and the answer from Thethi–Shala is matter-of-fact: the light coming from the Moon, of course. Hëna is not a painted Olympian here. She is the pale counterweight to Dielli — crescent and disk, night and day — stitched also to a northern woman’s crown beside a sun-star, carved on chair and slab, inked as rayed moons among tattoos that favor light over dark. Below the ridge, work still keeps her calendar. Sow while she wanes, or the stalk grows and the seed fails. Cut hair on the decrease; marry under the full face if offspring is wanted. Lay a house foundation on the growing moon. Infants are kept from staring at her. None of this needs a temple speech. The phases themselves are the rule. When a solemn be is taken, the moon may be named with the sun — me hënë, me diell — as sacred witness, not decoration. In some remembered tales she and Dielli are wife and husband; in others brother and sister, and then never consorts. Where a daughter of Moon and Sun falls as a drop of sky against pride and evil, that is her kinship reading, not a new goddess Tonight the crescent holds. Tomorrow the disk will answer. The pair is the cult.
