Saint Elias (thunder / rain saint absorber)

Shën Ilia / Shëndelli

Rainmaking songs invoke Ilia alongside Dielli and Perëndi as ritual speech, not a chart of gods.

Description

Saint Elias (Shën Ilia / Shëndelli) is the main Christian absorber of storm and sky attributes in the Albanian folk calendar — a weather saint, not a reconstructed pagan Ilia god-name. Folklore has the prophet riding the heavens on a white horse or chariot of fire and hurling thunderbolts at kulshedras; he protects against storms and fires, with a feast on 20 July and many hilltop sanctuaries. Rainmaking songs invoke Ilia alongside Dielli and Perëndi as ritual speech, not a chart of gods. On Tomorr he overlaps with Abaz Ali identification; on the Kosova Ali Day calendar the noon flip from Ali to Elias points back to the Sari Salltëk feast geography, with soft edges to Shurdh, Perëndi, Zojz, and Dielli — related weather faces, not one identity.

Lead story

July heat sits on the hill churches named for Elias. Folks say he rides a white horse or a chariot of fire and throws bolts where the storm-dragon coils — a Christian name doing weather work. On Tomorr another tongue answers Baba Abaz for the same high fear; in Kosova, midsummer noon was once the hinge when Ali’s morning became Elias’s afternoon and eyes watched the sky for rain. In the southwest a rain song can still braid Ilia with Dielli and Perëndi in one breath. That braid is prayer weather, not a marble family of gods. No one needs a fake pre-Christian Ilia temple to hear thunder under a saint’s name.

Linked stories

  • Folk weather capacity: Shën Ilia (Elias) strikes kulshedras with thunderbolts from hilltop sanctuaries (~20 July feast). Syncretic storm saint — not a reconstructed pagan Ilia god-name, not Zeus clone.

  • Living mountain sacral parallel to the Tomorr set. Pashtrik graves; Aligjyni midsummer rain hopes; noon flip Ali→Elias. Dragon-deed legend telling shared with Shën Gjergji; kulshedra physiology stays on its own page.

  • Christian onomastics absorb Prende: ShënePremte, Saint Veneranda, Petka; Cordignano dense dedications; Kurbin shared Christian–Muslim cure pilgrimage. Saint box ring-fenced — does not erase dawn/Friday cult.

  • Storm figure rides hail clouds; turned by metal, noise, gunshots, outdoor brands (zjarr grammar). Absorbs I Verbti (Zadrima fire–wind) and Rmoria (Shala) as dialect map. Soft edges Zojz/Perëndi/Enji/Ilia/Drangue — no identity merge. Not pan-Albanian Zeus.

  • SW / pan rainmaking (thirrja e shiut) may set Shën Ilia beside Dielli and Perëndi in one breath. Ritual co-presence, not identity proof and not a marble triad. Perëndi stays essay/God-word; Dielli stays solar spine; Ilia stays Christian weather absorber. Soft edges only to Shurdh/Zojz — never ‘three names one Zeus.’

  • One sacred mass, separate chapters: Baba Tomor giant with eagles, Wind, Earthly Beauty, Shpirag, and Osum tears; Elias/Mary overlays. Not a Zeus temple — keep the chapters distinct.
