Lead story

In the lahutë’s country the animals keep the plot moving when men cannot. A star-brow courser is stolen and returned; later a warhorse screams over a wounded body until the zanas answer. At another bedside a serpent works as physician while Halili rides for a king’s head. In a zana meadow golden horns become hostages that thaw a bridal war. After seven years a cuckoo’s news hangs over a secret grave the sea-baloz digs — until Halili’s sword and the zanas’ hands rewrite the ending. Four faces. One pack. No bestiary throne for any of them.
