Herr (dwarf)

Herr / Herri (Thopçi)

Elsie Herr dwarf + Tirta Herri≈Thopçi; thoperc absorbed

Description

Herr (Alb. herr/herri, also harr/harri) is a dwarf-like being of Albanian folk tales, related to the verb harr ‘to weed, prune, cut.’ The toponym Zall-Herr (‘sandbank of the herr’) north of Tirana preserves the name. Tirta notes that elsewhere he is called Thopçi — tiny, sometimes a teaser and sometimes a benefactor — so the Thopërç/Thopçi alias cloud lives on this page rather than as a separate peer. He is not giant-class (distinct from Gog / Katallan) and not an Ottoman jinn overlay page.

Features

  • appear as dwarf-like being in folk tales (Elsie Herr)
  • regional synonym Thopçi / Thopërç dwarf-goblin (Tirta equate; Elsie Thopërc entry absorbed)
  • ambivalent: teasing or beneficent (Tirta)

Lead story

North of Tirana a sandbank still carries the name — Zall-Herr — and the tales keep a dwarf who weeds and cuts: herr / herri, also harr. Tirta says elsewhere he is called Thopçi — tiny, sometimes a tease, sometimes a helper. Elsie’s Thopërç brownie travels with that name-cloud on this figure, not as a second atlas peer. The Ottoman xhindi keeps its own jinn page. This is the small northern dwarf, not a giant and not a jinn.
