Description
Ottoman/Arabic overlay spirit naturalized in Albanian folk belief. Elsie 2001 s.v. Jinn: Alb. xhind, def. xhindi, from Turk. cin; related oriental folklore. Can assume human and animal forms. Originally ghosts of the dead who have found no peace. Living belief places them at night gardens, toilets, river mouths; creaking doors and flickering lights. Elsie also keeps Qipull as a jinn/goblin type (idiom i kanë kërcyer qipujt). He is not the northern dwarf Herr / Thopçi, and not the Abrahamic devil Dreq/Djall.

Lead story
At night the house can feel occupied without a guest. Xhindi are the Ottoman-period spirits Albanian speech kept from Turk. cin — able to wear human or animal shape, restless dead who found no peace. Folk keep them at river mouths and dark corners; a door creaks, a lamp flickers. Qipull rides the same cloud in idiom. The small northern dwarf of Zall-Herr is another being.
