Description

Laurë (Elsie headword Laura; Alb. laurë, def. laura) is the Tirana-region ugly river/pool hag. Elsie 2001 (~158): an ugly old hag who can transform into a small amphibious animal; raucous voice at the edge of ponds and rivers where she lives; when approached she disappears into the water; sometimes heard at roadsides, where dogs chase her. Tirta 2004:135–136 lists Laura among mythic beings of streams and marshes. Not the same as Floçkë (comb-at-bank water maiden / beauty pole). Physiology stays with the ugly river hag — not a mermaid kit or Lorelei romance.

Lead story

At the reed edge near Tirana the water keeps an ugly voice. Laurë is not the long-haired comb-bride of the lakes. She is the old hag of pond and river — raucous at the bank, gone into the dark when footsteps close in. Folk say she can become a small amphibious animal; dogs may chase her cry along the roadside before the water takes her again. Floçkë keeps her braid and her beauty. Laurë is the malignant counter-image: marsh, croak, disappearance.
