Description
Bushtra (Alb. bushtër/bushtra; in Kosova also Lëbushtër) is a female swamp monster of Albanian folk belief. She inhabits swamplands and is said to howl and spit fire and brimstone. In Kosova she takes the form of a witch or old hag bent on harm, and women born to do evil are sometimes called bushtra. Folk etymology links her name to bushtër ‘female dog’; she is related etymologically to the swamp-steer Bush but is not the same being, and she is not the lexical fire-kuçedra nickname folded under Kulshedra.
